The above description refers to my geographic progression today, rather than in railway parlance which is generally Up to London. I’m making a start on the blog today as the train speeds through Bedfordshire into Northants. It stands to be a late night when I finish today’s journeying, so may not feel like much typing then.
The Story, so far….
All set after a fine breakfast at the Mason’s Arms. The plan has changed already as I’ve ‘hopped’ to Hellifield on the Morecambe train. Currently having a coffee in the impressive (privately run) station buffet. Revised departure time from here is 09:41.
The full itinerary for the day follows…
Before I go on, let me tell you how impressed I am with The Mason’s Arms at Gargrave. I’ll knock together something for Tripadvisor tomorrow which I’ll copy here.
Anyway, here’s how I got here….
Smart move to be in Wales when England are playing in the World Cup with a 23:00 kick off on a Saturday night. I had a really peaceful night’s sleep, and despite my worse fears to the contrary, no early morning returning guests or other carousing disturbances. Thank you Wales.
A sneak peak at the plan for today follows…
Good Evening from the Holyhead Travelodge. I know how to live it up on a Saturday night. It has been quite a long day, to not really get that far from where I was last night. In the normal course of events, a journey from Shrewsbury to Holyhead takes a little over three hours. It took me four times that – which is of course the point of all this.
No dramas today, and no cock-ups, though there was a deliberate diversion from the plan. Lots of fabulous scenery and weather which couldn’t make its mind up.
Oh, and a ride behind a steam train…
You can see more of the best (?) photos from the trip so far on Flickr.
I was making notes as I went along (sounds like the old days…) and an edited/enhanced version follows….
